Sheikh Jimeta Calls Tinubu ‘Infidel’, Prays for Allah’s Curse on President and His Supporters

Northern Islamic cleric, Mallam Saleh Muhammad Jimeta, has sparked controversy after reportedly invoking curses against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his supporters during a Friday sermon.

In a video circulating on social media, the cleric questioned the President’s presence in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, where Tinubu recently travelled to perform the Umrah pilgrimage.

Jimeta was heard saying: “May Allah curse Tinubu. May Allah curse anyone who supports Tinubu.”

He also described the Nigerian leader as an “infidel” and a “big unbeliever”, claiming that people in Makkah would have driven him away if they knew his identity.

The cleric’s remarks appeared to be connected to comments he attributed to Tinubu concerning Prophet Moses and Egypt. He questioned the President’s reported statement that Moses would never return to Egypt, challenging what he considered the meaning and implication of the comparison.

Jimeta also brought First Lady Remi Tinubu into the controversy, alleging that she had made a similar remark before the President.

The cleric argued that Moses was a prophet of Allah and questioned why Tinubu would make a statement that he interpreted as comparing himself with the revered religious figure. He maintained that Moses would eventually return to Egypt for what he described as further liberation.

The video of the sermon began circulating widely on Sunday, November 1, 2026, attracting reactions from Nigerians on social media.

The controversy comes shortly after Tinubu performed Umrah at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, where the Presidency said he offered prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity, stability and progress.

It is important to note that Jimeta’s description of the President as an infidel is his personal religious accusation, not an established fact. No official response from the Presidency to the cleric’s remarks was contained in the reports reviewed.

The incident has renewed public discussion about the intersection of religion, political leadership and freedom of expression in Nigeria.
