US Congressman Riley Moore Hails Reported Arrest of Mahmoud Adam, Says Nigeria-US Security Cooperation Bearing Fruit

United States Congressman Riley M. Moore has welcomed the reported arrest of Mahmoud Adam, describing the development as significant for Christians in Nigeria and linking it to ongoing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.

Moore, a Republican member of the US House of Representatives, made the remarks in a post on X on Saturday.

“This is great news for Christians in Nigeria!” Moore wrote.

He described Adam as a “radical Islamic Fulani terrorist leader responsible for the killings of countless Christians” and said the reported arrest was evidence that the US-Nigeria security cooperation agreement was producing results.

The American lawmaker specifically credited the Nigerian government for the reported arrest.

“The Nigerian government deserves credit for making this arrest,” Moore said, while also arguing that efforts by the US Congress and the administration of President Donald Trump to defend Christians were making a difference.

“We must keep pushing to defend our brothers and sisters in Christ!” he added.

According to current reports, Adam was reportedly arrested in the early hours of September 12, 2026, at his compound in Plateau State.

Reports have described him in different ways, including as a prominent Fulani community leader and as a person allegedly linked to violent groups. However, Nigerian authorities had not publicly provided a full account establishing the allegations against him at the time of the reports reviewed.

The circumstances surrounding his detention and the precise allegations against him therefore remain subject to official clarification.

Moore's comments come amid increased attention in Washington to insecurity and attacks affecting communities in Nigeria, including Christian communities.

Nigeria and the United States have maintained security cooperation involving counterterrorism and related security matters. Moore presented Adam's reported arrest as evidence that the relationship was producing tangible results.

His statement, however, represents the congressman's assessment of the significance of the arrest. It does not independently establish the effectiveness or specific operational contribution of the security agreement.

The reported development comes against the background of continuing counterterrorism operations and prosecutions in Nigeria.

The DSS has separately been prosecuting suspected leaders and members of Ansaru, an Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist organisation, over terrorism-related offences. In September, five defendants were re-arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations connected to the May 2026 abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State. All five pleaded not guilty to the amended charges.

The separate cases illustrate the continuing efforts by Nigerian security and judicial authorities to pursue suspected terrorist networks through arrests and prosecutions.

While Moore has described Adam as a terrorist leader responsible for the deaths of Christians, the available Nigerian reports have not yet provided a comprehensive official account establishing all of those allegations.

The reported arrest is therefore likely to attract further scrutiny as Nigerian authorities clarify Adam's identity, alleged affiliations, suspected activities and the evidence supporting any charges against him.

For now, Moore has used the development to argue that closer US-Nigeria security cooperation is producing results, while crediting Nigerian authorities for carrying out the reported arrest.
