Reality TV star Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has described October 2 as a special date in her life after marking the anniversary of her Big Brother Naija victory with another milestone in the boxing ring.
Phyna made the statement after defeating Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday in a celebrity boxing bout at Balmoral Promotions’ Chaos in the Ring event in Lagos.
The fight, held at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, on October 1, ended in the fourth round after Phyna knocked out her opponent. Reports described the contest as Nigeria’s first female celebrity boxing bout.
Reflecting on her latest achievement in a post on X, Phyna recalled that October 2 was also the date she won the 2022 edition of Big Brother Naija: Level Up.
“October 2nd will forever be a special date in my life,” she wrote, celebrating both milestones.
She said her journey from reality television to boxing demonstrated her willingness to challenge herself and take on new opportunities.
“From reality TV to the boxing ring, I’ve always been willing to challenge myself, break barriers and prove that there is so much more to Phyna than what people see.”
Phyna dedicated the achievement to women who have been told they could not succeed in certain fields.
“This one is for every woman who has ever been told she couldn’t. We can. We will. And we absolutely should.”
The victory over Nkechi Blessing came after weeks of public exchanges between the two entertainers before they eventually agreed to settle their differences inside the ring.
Phyna controlled the contest before securing the decisive fourth-round knockout.
Following the victory, Phyna said she was interested in continuing with boxing and called out actress Etinosa Idemudia as a potential next opponent. Etinosa, who was present at ringside, accepted the challenge.
Reports from the event also said Phyna received a ₦50 million prize and an electric vehicle following her victory.
Phyna also thanked Balmoral Promotions and Bet9ja for providing the opportunity to participate in the event and described the victory as the beginning of a new chapter.
“October 2nd, a date of victory, courage and new beginnings,” she wrote.
She concluded her message by describing herself as a “BBN winner. Boxer. Champion”, while suggesting that her boxing journey had only just begun.
Phyna's latest achievement adds another chapter to the career of the reality TV star, who won Big Brother Naija: Level Up in 2022. The official DStv account records October 2, 2022, as the date she was crowned winner of the season.
