‘Nobody I Asked Wants Tinubu Back’ — Buba Galadima Says Southeast Presidency Can Unite Nigeria

Chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Buba Galadima, has said the people he personally asked did not want President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to return for another term in 2027.

Galadima made the comment while speaking on the Naija Unfiltered Podcast, where he discussed the political situation ahead of the 2027 presidential election and the opposition's strategy. 

According to Galadima, his position was based on conversations he had with people rather than a formal opinion survey.

“Nobody I asked wants Tinubu to come back.”

He subsequently linked his argument to what he described as the need to prevent further division along regional, ethnic and religious lines.

Galadima argued that Nigerians should consider supporting a Southern candidate as part of efforts to address the country's political divisions.

The NDC chieftain went further to argue that allowing the Southeast to produce the next president would help promote national unity.

“The only way to unite this country is to allow people from the Southeast taste power.”

He said he was prepared to support and defend the argument on any platform, describing it as a political strategy aimed at addressing what he sees as longstanding regional grievances. 

Galadima has consistently spoken about the importance of power rotation and the opposition's chances ahead of the 2027 election.

In May, he said the NDC had zoned its presidential ticket to the South. At the time, he also said the party intended to proceed with primaries to select its presidential candidate. 

The NDC subsequently became associated with a proposed Peter Obi-Rabiu Kwankwaso presidential ticket, with Obi from Anambra State in the Southeast and Kwankwaso from Kano State in the North. Galadima has described the arrangement as an attempt to combine regional political interests. 

Galadima's assertion that “nobody” he asked wants Tinubu back should be understood as a description of his personal conversations and political assessment.

It does not, by itself, establish the views of the Nigerian electorate as a whole or constitute an independently conducted opinion poll. The 2027 presidential election will ultimately be determined by voters through the electoral process.

The comments come as political parties and opposition groups intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Galadima has also previously questioned whether the 2027 election would be sufficiently free and fair, while INEC has maintained that it is preparing to conduct the elections and has stressed the importance of neutrality among its officials. 

His latest remarks are therefore likely to add to the ongoing national debate over zoning, regional representation, power rotation and the competing political platforms ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
