A man identified as Rasak Wahab, popularly known as “Ojo Iku,” has reportedly died following a suspected cult attack in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
Wahab was shot in the Arowomole area of Osogbo on Sunday, October 4, during an attack allegedly carried out by suspected members of a rival cult group.
The Osun State Police Command initially said Wahab was evacuated to a hospital and was responding to treatment. A report published on Monday, however, said he later died from injuries sustained in the attack.
The latest killing occurred just two days after another suspected cult clash in the Owo-Eba area of Osogbo, where two men were killed.
The victims were identified as Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged,” and Oluwaseyi Daniel, also known as “OSHA.” Four other people sustained gunshot injuries during the Friday attack, according to the police.
Police described the Owo-Eba incident as a suspected cult clash and said tactical teams had been directed to apprehend those responsible.
Following the series of shootings, Osun State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Zungura ordered the deployment of tactical teams across parts of Osogbo.
The police said the teams would conduct intelligence-led operations and raids targeting suspected cult members, criminal hideouts and other locations linked to criminal activity.
The cases have also been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation, according to the police.
The successive incidents have heightened tension in Osogbo, with reports that some residents and traders were forced to flee areas affected by the violence.
Residents have called for stronger security measures to prevent further killings and possible reprisal attacks.
The circumstances surrounding Wahab’s killing and whether it was directly connected to the earlier Owo-Eba clash remain under investigation. Police had not announced arrests in connection with the latest attack as of the latest reports.
The police have urged residents to remain vigilant and provide useful information that could assist investigators in identifying those behind the shootings.
