Mahmoud Adam Arrest: Hassan’s Allegations Against Senator Shehu Buba Resurface

The reported arrest of Mahmoud Adam, described in recent reports as an alleged terrorist leader, has triggered renewed attention to earlier allegations made by a man identified as Hassan against Senator Shehu Buba Umar of Bauchi South.

The latest claims were amplified by social media commentator D English Alhaji, who argued that Adam’s reported arrest provides evidence supporting allegations previously made by Hassan.

According to the claim circulating online, Adam was among northern Fulani leaders allegedly sent to Kogi State by the senator to cause trouble.

However, that specific allegation could not be independently established from the available official reports on Adam’s arrest.

Hassan had previously made a series of allegations against Senator Shehu Buba, accusing the lawmaker of having links to banditry and other criminal activities.

In interviews circulated online by D English Alhaji, Hassan alleged that individuals connected to criminal groups had relationships with the senator and made other claims concerning alleged training, financing and movement of suspected criminals.

A report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism documented the allegations but noted that they had not been independently established. Senator Buba has repeatedly denied the accusations.

Rather than accepting the allegations, Buba has called on Nigeria’s security agencies to investigate them.

The senator said his legal team had written to the State Security Service (SSS/DSS), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) and Nigeria Police Force, requesting investigations into allegations linking him to banditry, terrorism financing and kidnapping.

Buba has also described some of the materials circulating online as propaganda, false narratives and manipulated videos, insisting that accusations should be subjected to proper evidentiary standards.

Recent reports said Nigerian authorities arrested Mahmoud Adam, whom some security-related reports have described as an alleged terrorist or militant leader.

Punch reported that US Congressman Riley Moore welcomed Adam’s reported arrest and described him as a radical Islamic Fulani terrorist leader allegedly responsible for attacks against Christians. Those descriptions were attributed to the US lawmaker and do not, by themselves, establish criminal liability.

The reported arrest has nevertheless generated renewed online scrutiny because of separate claims attempting to connect Adam to Senator Buba.

Some online reports have published photographs purporting to show Adam with Senator Buba. One such report claimed the images linked the two men, but the existence of photographs showing people together would not, by itself, establish sponsorship of terrorism, criminal cooperation or involvement in attacks.

Similarly, there is currently no verified evidence establishing that Adam was sent to Kogi by Buba to cause unrest.

The claim that Adam’s arrest therefore proves Hassan's wider allegations remains an interpretation advanced by the commentators making the claim, rather than an established finding by the DSS, police or a court.

D English Alhaji has now called on the DSS to continue its investigation and arrest anyone it finds responsible for sponsoring terrorism or other criminal activities.

The renewed calls come against the backdrop of Buba’s own request that security agencies investigate the allegations against him.

For now, the central issues remain subject to investigation. The reported arrest of Mahmoud Adam is a separate development from the allegations against Senator Buba, and any connection between the two would require evidence from competent security agencies or a judicial process.
