Madonna University Expels Nursing Students Over Viral Hospital Video as NANS Appeals for Clemency

Madonna University has reportedly expelled some nursing students following their involvement in a viral social media video recorded within a hospital environment, prompting the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to appeal to the institution to reconsider the punishment.

NANS, through its President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, acknowledged that the students’ conduct was inappropriate and inconsistent with the ethical and professional standards expected of nursing students.

However, the students’ body appealed to the university management to temper disciplinary action with clemency and allow the affected students to continue their studies under a stern warning.

In a statement issued on Friday, NANS described the students’ conduct as “grossly inappropriate,” saying it did not align with the discipline, ethics and professional standards expected within the nursing profession.

The association, however, argued that expulsion was an extremely severe punishment with potentially long-term consequences for the students’ education and future careers.

NANS said the students had already recognised the seriousness of their actions and could learn from the incident without having their academic careers terminated.

The students’ body urged Madonna University to replace the expulsion with a formal and stern warning.

NANS appealed to the management to give the students an opportunity to correct their mistakes and continue their education.

The association argued that discipline should not necessarily mean bringing a student’s entire academic journey to an end, particularly where the students had acknowledged their wrongdoing.

It also said the affected students had invested years, resources and personal effort into their nursing education.

The controversy arose after a video involving the nursing students circulated widely on social media.

Reports said the video was recorded within a hospital environment and generated criticism over the students’ conduct and the appropriateness of creating such content in a clinical setting.

Details surrounding the exact circumstances of the video and the university’s full disciplinary proceedings were not immediately available in the reports reviewed.

NANS, however, did not dispute that the conduct warranted disciplinary action, instead focusing its appeal on the severity of the punishment.

The association said it remained committed to academic excellence, professional ethics and responsible conduct among Nigerian students.

While acknowledging the need for discipline, NANS urged Madonna University to consider the students’ future and allow them to learn from the incident.

The association expressed hope that the university would reconsider the expulsion and permit the students to return to their studies under strict conditions.

The appeal now places the focus on whether Madonna University will review the disciplinary decision and accept NANS’ request for a stern warning in place of expulsion.
