Vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has warned leaders of the opposition party that they could be “retired from politics” if President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) win the 2027 presidential election.
Amaechi made the statement while addressing the ADC National Women League Conference in Abuja on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, where he urged party members to intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the election.
“The crop of leaders you see here, if APC wins the 2027 elections, we are retired from politics. So if you don’t want us to retire from politics, we must go home,” Amaechi said.
The former Rivers State governor urged ADC leaders and supporters who travelled to Abuja for the conference to return to their respective states, local government areas and wards to campaign for the party.
Amaechi said he would also embark on grassroots campaigns, mentioning Kebbi, Yola, Rivers and Delta among locations where he intends to participate in the party’s mobilisation efforts.
He told party members that the ADC should not take any election for granted, including governorship contests, arguing that a president would need governors to effectively govern.
Amaechi also suggested that securing about 2,000 votes from individual wards would significantly strengthen the party's electoral prospects.
Drawing from his experience as a prominent APC member before the 2015 general election, Amaechi recalled how the party mobilised women across the country while challenging the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“When we were in APC and we wanted to remove your government, you saw what we did. We brought out the women,” he told the gathering.
He urged ADC women to similarly return to their communities and persuade voters to participate in the election.
Amaechi also used the occasion to criticise economic conditions under the Tinubu administration, referring to the rising cost of food, education and other household necessities.
He claimed that the number of Nigerians living in poverty and the number of children out of school had increased, although the specific figures he cited during the political gathering were not accompanied by supporting statistical sources in the reported speech.
He further urged northern women in particular to participate actively in the election, making several claims about poverty and the country's economic situation as part of his political argument.
Also speaking at the conference, Titi Atiku Abubakar, wife of ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, urged women to participate actively in the party's grassroots campaign.
She cited the rising cost of medicines and other necessities and urged women not to allow food or financial inducements to determine their votes.
The conference formed part of the ADC's preparations for the 2027 general election as the party seeks to expand its grassroots structures across the country.
Amaechi's warning that the party's current crop of leaders could be “retired from politics” if APC wins was delivered as a political appeal to ADC members to intensify their campaign activities. It was not a prediction of the election outcome.
The 2027 presidential election is scheduled for January 16, 2027, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission's timetable.
