A commercial motorcycle rider is reportedly battling for his life after a serious collision involving Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) operatives at the entrance of Iyin-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday when the rider, who was travelling from Ado-Ekiti, was flagged down by FRSC officials but allegedly failed to stop and attempted to evade the officers.
According to eyewitness accounts cited in local reports, an FRSC operative moved across the rider’s path in an attempt to stop him, resulting in a collision.
The collision left the motorcycle rider critically injured, with reports saying he lost consciousness following the crash.
One of the FRSC operatives was also reportedly hit during the incident.
Residents and passersby were said to have gathered at the scene as the circumstances surrounding the crash generated concern and arguments over how the rider was stopped.
Some eyewitnesses reportedly questioned the manner in which the attempted enforcement was carried out, while the account circulating online also maintains that the rider initially failed to obey the directive to stop.
The precise circumstances leading to the collision could not be independently established as of the time of filing this report.
In particular, it remains unclear exactly how the FRSC operative moved into the motorcycle’s path and whether the action directly caused the crash.
The rider’s current medical condition and whereabouts were also not immediately confirmed.
The FRSC had not issued an official statement on the incident in the report reviewed.
The incident has renewed concerns about the need for caution during roadside enforcement, particularly when motorists or motorcycle riders fail to stop when flagged down.
FRSC’s own patrol guidance recognises the use of enforcement teams to apprehend road users who fail to stop during traffic-control operations, including the use of personnel positioned ahead of patrol vehicles.
However, the circumstances of the Iyin-Ekiti collision remain subject to further clarification from the relevant authorities.
For now, the key concern remains the condition of the injured rider as questions continue over how the encounter between the motorcycle rider and the FRSC operatives escalated into a serious crash.
