2027: Peter Obi Vows to Concede Election If Poll Is Free, Fair and Credible

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to accept the outcome of the 2027 presidential election if the exercise is conducted freely, fairly and credibly.

Obi made the commitment while responding to a question on whether he would concede defeat if another candidate emerged victorious at the polls.

The former Anambra State governor said the decision to accept the outcome would depend on whether the election genuinely reflected the wishes of Nigerian voters.

“If the election is free, fair and credible, I will,” Obi said.

He maintained that the ultimate authority in a democratic election should be the people, stressing that candidates must respect the decision of voters when the electoral process is transparent and credible.

Obi's position comes against the backdrop of continued concerns over the credibility of elections in Nigeria, including disputes over the conduct and results of the 2023 presidential election.

In 2023, Obi and Atiku Abubakar challenged the declaration of Bola Tinubu as winner of the presidential election at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal and subsequently at the Supreme Court. Both challenges were unsuccessful, with the Supreme Court affirming Tinubu's victory in October 2023.

The 2023 election also generated criticism from some international observers. While the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) maintained that the election was free, fair and credible, an EU assessment raised concerns about transparency and shortcomings in the electoral process.

Obi's latest comment therefore places electoral credibility at the centre of his 2027 campaign message.

The NDC candidate has repeatedly argued that Nigerians should be allowed to freely choose their leaders and that political leaders must be accountable to voters.

His pledge to concede under a credible process also places pressure on electoral institutions, political parties and candidates to ensure that the 2027 election is conducted in a manner capable of winning public confidence.

With the 2027 presidential contest expected to be highly competitive, the credibility of the electoral process is likely to remain one of the major issues confronting INEC and the political class.
