Yoruba Tennis Club Turns 100

The Yoruba Tennis Club, one of Nigeria’s oldest indigenous social institutions, is celebrating its 100th anniversary, marking a century of history, fellowship, culture and civic engagement.

Founded in 1926 as the Orelodun Tennis Club, the institution emerged during the colonial era and later became known as the Yoruba Tennis Club. Its centenary programme has featured cultural events, lectures, exhibitions and discussions examining the club’s historical contribution to Lagos and Nigerian society.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, a member and vice patron of the club, was scheduled to deliver the centenary lecture at the club’s Greetings Hall in Onikan on Tuesday, September 15. The lecture was announced as part of the club’s anniversary activities, with governance, democracy and the development of Lagos among the themes surrounding the event.

The centenary has brought together generations of professionals, community leaders, politicians and other prominent Nigerians, while the club has used the milestone to reflect on its institutional memory and place in Nigeria’s social and cultural history.
