Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, has revealed that he had planned to appoint late veteran Yoruba actor, Taiwo Hassan Ogogo, as his Special Adviser on Culture and Tourism if he becomes the governor of Ogun State.
Adeola, who represents Ogun West Senatorial District, made the disclosure while paying a condolence visit to the family of the late actor.
According to the senator, Ogogo was not only a respected entertainer but also someone he considered suitable for a role in developing Ogun State’s cultural and tourism sectors.
“I planned to make the late Taiwo Hassan Ogogo my Special Adviser on Culture and Tourism, when I become the Governor of Ogun State,” Adeola was quoted as saying.
In another account of his remarks, Adeola said he had told God that, if he was destined to become governor, the late actor would have played a role in his administration.
The revelation has added a political dimension to tributes for Ogogo, whose death has generated reactions across Nigeria's entertainment industry and Ogun State.
Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, was a veteran Nigerian actor, producer and director who was born in Ilaro, Ogun State. He began his acting career in the early 1980s and became one of the prominent figures in Yoruba-language cinema.
Adeola, an All Progressives Congress (APC) senator, has represented Ogun West in the Senate since 2023. He previously represented Lagos West in the Senate between 2015 and 2023.
His comments have also renewed conversations about the role of prominent entertainers in government, particularly in promoting Nigeria's cultural heritage, tourism and creative economy.
For Adeola, Ogogo's proposed appointment would have placed the veteran actor's experience and influence in the creative industry at the service of Ogun State's cultural and tourism development.
The senator's disclosure, however, remains a statement about a proposed future appointment and does not constitute an existing government position or appointment.
