Woman Shares Emotional Encounter With Almajiri Boy, Sparks Conversation on Education and Child Welfare

 A Nigerian woman, identified as Halimah Ahmed, has shared a touching personal experience involving a young Fulani almajiri boy who worked as a helper in her home, sparking renewed conversations about education, child welfare, and access to schooling for vulnerable children.

According to her account, the boy estimated to be around 16 years old assisted with laundry work and was described as dutiful, respectful, and neat in his duties.

She recounted an incident where she noticed him reading the label on a sachet of detergent, which led to a conversation about his educational background. The boy reportedly explained that he stopped schooling at Primary 6 following the death of his father, who was the only educated member of the family.

He further stated that after his father’s death, he was taken in by an uncle who discouraged formal education, claiming that “boko is haram,” a situation he said led to him leaving school completely.

The woman said she offered to help facilitate his return to school if he was interested, but the boy declined, explaining that he had previously been moved from Kano under similar circumstances and preferred to remain in his current arrangement for the time being.

According to her, the boy expressed a long-term ambition to eventually return to school through his own efforts, stating his desire to become a teacher and correct misconceptions about education.

“He said he would learn trading, save money, and sponsor himself back to school because he wants to become a teacher and show that education is not forbidden,” she recounted.

The story has since generated emotional reactions online, with many users praising the boy’s determination while also raising concerns about the vulnerability of out-of-school children in parts of the country.

Education advocates say the account reflects broader challenges surrounding access to education, child labor, and the integration of almajiri children into formal schooling systems.
