Sowore Returns to Nigeria, Says He Is Ready to Work With Nigerians Ahead of 2027

Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has returned to Nigeria from the United States, declaring his readiness to continue working with Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sowore announced his return in a post on X, saying he arrived back in the country on Sunday.

“Arrived back in Nigeria today from the United States, ready to work with Nigerians to end an era of government failure and build a country that works for everyone,” he wrote.

His return has also been reported by Nigerian media, with reports stating that he travelled to the United States and has now returned to resume his political activities and 2027 campaign.

In a statement issued around his return, Sowore said he planned to engage different groups across the country, including workers, students, youths, women, farmers, traders, professionals and communities.

He said the engagements would focus on issues contained in the AAC's 2027 agenda, including equal rights, justice, peace, security and economic development.

Sowore also said he remained committed to advocating for the participation of Nigerians living abroad in the country's democratic process and said an AAC administration would pursue diaspora voting if elected in 2027.

According to reports, Sowore said he had spent more than 20 months away from Nigeria and attributed his earlier departure to what he described as arrests, detention, travel restrictions and the seizure of his international passport by Nigerian security agencies.

While in the United States, he said he engaged Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders on the state of Nigeria and his political agenda. He also participated in a solidarity march for Palestine in New York and continued advocacy for diaspora voting rights.

Sowore is also expected to continue attending court proceedings connected to a cybercrime case instituted against him by the Department of State Services in 2025.

With his return, Sowore said his nationwide campaign and engagement with Nigerians would continue as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

His stated objective is to mobilise Nigerians around his political agenda and what he describes as the need for fundamental political, social and economic transformation.
