Sowore Returns to Family in US After 20 Months, Vows to Continue 2027 Campaign

African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has announced his return to his family home in New Jersey, United States, after what he described as 20 months away from his family amid legal battles and restrictions on his movement.

Sowore made the announcement in a post on X, where he accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of using government institutions to target him during the period.

“After 20 long months away from my family, I have finally arrived at our family home in New Jersey,” Sowore wrote.

According to the 2027 presidential candidate, the institutions involved included the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS). He specifically mentioned former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and DSS Director-General Tosin Ajayi, alleging that authorities repeatedly targeted his international passport and used court processes and bail conditions to restrict his movement.

Sowore described the period as a struggle for his freedom, saying he and his supporters “fought back” and “prevailed.” He also expressed appreciation to his lawyers and supporters for standing by him throughout the legal battles.

The activist said his stay in the United States would not mark the end of his political activities. He disclosed plans to visit several cities across the United States and Canada to engage Nigerians and supporters of his political movement.

Sowore further promised to return to Nigeria and resume his campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election, insisting that the difficulties he says he has faced would not weaken his political ambitions.

“Nothing can stop us,” he declared, adding that no persecution, detention, passport seizure or alleged abuse of state power would extinguish his determination to continue the #Sowore2027 campaign.

The development comes as Sowore intensifies his campaign for the 2027 election. In recent posts, he has continued to promote what he calls a revolutionary agenda, including free and quality education, greater accountability in government and a restructuring of how public resources are managed.

Sowore concluded his latest message with a renewed call to supporters, saying his movement remained determined to “take back our country” through the 2027 political process.

His allegations concerning the conduct of the police, DSS and the Tinubu administration remain his account of the events, and the post does not independently establish wrongdoing by the institutions or officials he named.
