Six years later, autopsy confirms Pelumi Onifade died from gunshot injury

Fresh developments have also emerged in the case of Pelumi Onifade, the 20-year-old journalist who disappeared while covering the #EndSARS protests in Lagos in October 2020.

A postmortem examination conducted by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital found that Onifade died from a penetrating firearm injury to the abdomen, resulting in massive internal bleeding.

The body was identified through DNA analysis, while the postmortem report was finalised and signed in July 2026.

According to reports, the findings have been submitted to the coroner's inquest investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. The inquest is scheduled to continue on October 6, 2026.

The development has renewed calls from rights groups and Nigerians for accountability and clarification of the circumstances surrounding the journalist's death.
