Popular cleric Primate Elijah Ayodele has called on the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, while also questioning what he described as inconsistencies in the handling of controversial public figures.
In a statement attributed to him, Ayodele urged the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider resolving Kanu’s prolonged detention, arguing that it would contribute to national peace and reconciliation.
“The Nigerian government should release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” he said.
He further questioned the government’s approach to individuals involved in sensitive national security conversations, asking why similar actions are not taken against other figures who have also been linked to controversial statements or engagements with armed groups.
“Since you keep Kanu in prison, why can’t you keep Sheikh Gumi in prison too?” he added.
The remarks have sparked renewed debate on social media, with opinions divided between those calling for Kanu’s release as a political solution and others insisting that his case should follow due legal process without external pressure.
Human rights advocates and political analysts note that the issue of Nnamdi Kanu remains one of Nigeria’s most sensitive legal and political matters, involving court proceedings, national security concerns, and regional tensions.
As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government has not issued a response to Primate Ayodele’s latest comments.
