Peter Obi Criticised Over Alleged Campaign Attire During Condolence Visit

Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has come under criticism on social media after an X user questioned his decision to allegedly wear campaign-related attire while visiting a bereaved family.

The criticism was made by an X user identified as Àlúbàríkà, who accused Obi of turning a condolence visit into a political opportunity.

“The presidential candidate of NDC Mr Peter Obi seems to be the only man who can visit the bereaved to offer his condolences while dressed in campaign attire in an event that has happened close to a year,” the user wrote.

The commentator further alleged that Obi's appearance and timing suggested that the visit was politically motivated.

“Even in his premeditated moments of grief, everything somehow becomes a campaign opportunity to him,” the post added.

The remarks have generated discussion among social media users, with reactions divided between those who criticised Obi and others who argued that political figures should not necessarily be barred from wearing clothing associated with their political movements during public engagements.

Obi is currently the presidential candidate of the NDC ahead of Nigeria's 2027 presidential election. The party formally affirmed his candidacy at its special convention in Abuja in May 2026.

His political activities have intensified in recent weeks as he continues engagements with supporters and stakeholders ahead of the election. On September 7, Obi urged Nigerians to participate actively in the 2027 election and defend their votes from the polling unit through the final declaration of results.

However, the claim that the condolence visit was deliberately organised as a campaign activity has not been independently established. The social-media post represents the opinion of the author, and no statement from Obi or his campaign organisation was provided in the post to explain the choice of attire or the timing of the visit.
