A social media post questioning the political activities of former Delta State Governor and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) vice-presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa, has sparked reactions online following a comment attributed to him about the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.
The controversy followed a post by Emma Ik Umeh quoting Okowa as saying: “Although I was the PDP vice-presidential candidate in 2023, I knew we were going to lose the election.”
Reacting to the statement, an X user identified as Oghenevwogaga questioned Okowa's public comment, alleging that the former governor had previously been emotionally affected by the election result.
“For someone who fainted on the day the result was announced because he lost. This is not what he's supposed to say in public,” the user wrote.
The user further alleged that Okowa was now vulnerable to scrutiny by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), claiming that he had used Delta State resources to support the political project before subsequently seeking election to the Senate on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The allegation was not accompanied by evidence in the post, and there is no basis from the social-media exchange alone to establish that Okowa is currently in an EFCC “trap” or that state resources were unlawfully invested in the 2023 presidential campaign.
Okowa served as Delta State governor from 2015 to 2023 and was Atiku Abubakar's running mate on the PDP ticket in the 2023 presidential election. The ticket finished second behind the Bola Tinubu-Kashim Shettima ticket, according to the official election results.
Okowa later joined the APC in 2025, a move that attracted considerable political attention given his previous role as a senior PDP figure and running mate in the 2023 election.
The latest controversy therefore combines Okowa's retrospective comments about the 2023 election with political criticism of his subsequent realignment and reported interest in the 2027 Senate race.
However, the claim that Okowa “fainted” after the 2023 election result, as well as the allegations concerning the use of Delta State resources, would require independent evidence. The social-media post itself does not establish either claim.
The development highlights the increasingly heated political debate surrounding former governors and other prominent politicians as parties and potential candidates position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
