Prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have been thrown into confusion over the requirement for National Education Records Database (NERD) clearance as online registration for the 2026 Batch C mobilisation gets underway.
The confusion followed conflicting updates circulating among prospective corps members on Tuesday, with some reports claiming that NERD clearance is no longer required before completing online registration, while others maintained that the clearance remains compulsory.
An update attributed to NYSC-focused platform NYSC360 said the registration portal was operating smoothly and that NERD clearance was, at the time of the update, no longer compulsory for completing the online registration.
According to the update, prospective corps members could proceed with their registration and present their NERD documents at the orientation camp.
“NERD is currently no longer compulsory for online registration. You will instead be required to present your NERD document at the camp,” the platform reported.
The development has generated relief among some prospective corps members who had encountered difficulties completing their registration because of the NERD requirement.
Another update circulating among prospective corps members, however, gave a different account.
A prospective corps member identified as Draptazzz said the NYSC portal had initially prevented completion of registration after biometric capture because of the NERD requirement.
The post subsequently said that, “as at this moment,” registration was going through without NERD clearance.
It explained that candidates whose NERD status remained “PENDING” could proceed with NYSC registration, while those whose clearance had been processed could have their status reflected as “PARTIAL.”
The conflicting reports have left some applicants uncertain about whether they should first complete their NERD process or proceed immediately with NYSC registration.
The confusion is significant because NYSC had previously announced that NERD clearance was compulsory for the 2026 Batch C registration.
The scheme announced that online registration for the 2026 Batch C would run from September 7 to September 13, 2026, and specifically warned prospective corps members to obtain their NERD Clearance Certificate before registering.
The earlier directive stated that prospective corps members without NERD clearance would not be able to register.
However, the latest reports from candidates using the portal suggest that the registration system may have been adjusted to allow some applicants to continue while their NERD status remains pending.
Based on the circulating updates, a “PENDING” NERD status does not necessarily mean that a prospective corps member has been disqualified from the current registration process.
The reports indicate that candidates may be able to continue their NYSC registration while waiting for their NERD clearance to be processed.
A “PARTIAL” status has also been described by applicants as an indication that the candidate has completed the portion of the NERD process required from them.
However, prospective corps members should treat such explanations as provisional unless they are confirmed directly by NYSC or NERD.
The latest development has also generated excitement among applicants who had struggled with slow portal performance and network congestion.
NYSC360 urged prospective corps members who had not completed their registration to take advantage of the improved portal performance instead of waiting until traffic increases again.
The NYSC's official website provides the scheme's registration requirements and directs prospective corps members to use its official registration channels.
The scheme also provides dedicated online registration support lines for mobilisation-related problems.
The conflicting information has also revived concerns among prospective corps members about the various costs associated with the mobilisation process.
One social-media post circulating among applicants listed NERD clearance, NYSC registration and medical fitness expenses as separate costs, bringing the reported total to about ₦23,500. However, the figures were contained in an applicant's social-media post and should not be regarded as an official NYSC fee schedule.
NYSC's official registration guidance states that only prospective corps members who want their call-up numbers sent by SMS and wish to print their call-up letters online are required to pay the specified online call-up fee, while those who do not wish to pay can collect their call-up numbers and letters through their institutions.
Prospective corps members are therefore advised to verify any payment request through official NYSC channels before making payments.
As of the latest available information, the most important issue for applicants is the apparent difference between the earlier official directive making NERD clearance compulsory and the latest reports that the portal is allowing registration with pending NERD status.
Until NYSC formally confirms the change, applicants should monitor the official NYSC portal and official communication channels for clarification.
The scheme's official website lists portal.nysc.org.ng as its registration portal and provides contact details and support channels for prospective corps members.
For now, applicants who can successfully proceed with registration while their NERD status remains pending should keep evidence of their registration and continue monitoring their NERD status, while those experiencing problems should contact NYSC through its official support channels rather than relying solely on social-media updates.
