Northern Nigeria is witnessing growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with social commentator and Peter Obi supporter Shehu Gazali Sadiq claiming that the trend is rattling the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Sadiq made the claim in a post on X, reacting to what he described as a “gale of defections” to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) across Northern Nigeria.
“The gale of defections to the NDC in Northern Nigeria is rattling the APC and the ADC. Northern Nigeria is NDC. Northern Nigeria is Peter Obi. Peter Obi is coming,” he wrote.
His statement is a political assessment and has not been independently established as evidence that Northern Nigeria as a whole has shifted allegiance to the NDC or Obi.
Political activity and party realignments have intensified ahead of the 2027 elections. In July, reports emerged of APC members in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State defecting to the NDC, with the defectors received by party officials.
Sadiq has also previously made public interventions supporting Obi, including an earlier statement in which he challenged critics of the former Anambra State governor and defended Obi against several allegations.
The latest comment therefore adds to Sadiq’s continuing advocacy for Obi as political parties and opposition groups intensify mobilisation ahead of 2027.
The NDC is among the political platforms seeking to build support ahead of the next presidential election, while the APC remains the governing party and the ADC has emerged as another platform attracting opposition figures and political realignments.
However, individual defections or party receptions do not by themselves establish the voting intentions of the wider Northern electorate.
Sadiq’s declaration that “Northern Nigeria is NDC” and “Northern Nigeria is Peter Obi” therefore remains his political characterization of the developing situation, rather than an independently verified assessment of the region’s electorate.
With the 2027 election approaching, further defections, coalition negotiations and grassroots mobilisation are expected to remain a major feature of Nigeria’s political landscape.
