Nigeria’s Security, Economic Reforms Necessary Despite Past Waste, Government Says

The Nigerian government has defended ongoing economic and security reforms, describing them as difficult but necessary measures aimed at strengthening national development, improving public finances and redirecting resources towards productive sectors.

The discussion focused on concerns over massive government expenditure in the past, including claims that hundreds of billions of naira were spent without achieving the desired impact. Speakers argued that Nigeria could no longer afford inefficient spending and waste at a time when critical sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure and security require significant investment.

According to the remarks, reforms are expected to improve accountability, reduce corruption and ensure that public resources are used more effectively for the benefit of Nigerians.

Security was identified as one of the country's most pressing priorities, with calls for increased funding and substantial investment in modern security capabilities. The government was urged to strengthen security institutions to protect lives and property, strategic national assets and communities affected by criminal activities.

Nigeria continues to face serious security challenges, particularly in parts of the northern region, with instability, armed groups, terrorism, banditry and cross-border criminal movements remaining major concerns.

The speakers stressed that an effective security system is essential for economic growth and national stability, noting that insecurity continues to affect agriculture, investment, employment and livelihoods across several communities.

There were also calls for expanded access to finance and more inclusive financial opportunities, particularly for students, young people and other underserved groups. Improved access to funding, the speakers argued, could support entrepreneurship, job creation and broader economic participation.

The administration was also credited for reviewing certain policies and pursuing reforms intended to address longstanding economic and governance challenges. Supporters of the reforms acknowledged that the process may involve difficult decisions but maintained that sustainable development requires stronger institutions and more disciplined management of public resources.

The government, according to the discussion, remains focused on improving revenue generation, economic management and investment while expanding programmes designed to support citizens and strengthen livelihoods.

The speakers further emphasised that Nigeria's long-term stability will depend on sustained reforms, effective security institutions, accountable governance and strategic investment in productive sectors.

They called for continued efforts to confront terrorism, criminal activities and other threats to national security, while ensuring that government programmes deliver measurable benefits to Nigerians
