Nigerian singer Mavo has responded sharply to fans of Burna Boy following backlash over his public support for Wizkid, saying he no longer intends to “side the wrong” simply because of pressure from supporters of the Grammy-winning singer.
Mavo made the remarks during an Instagram Live session, where he addressed what he described as attempts by Burna Boy fans to “bring him down” after he linked up with Wizkid.
According to Mavo, he previously had “real respect” for Burna Boy but said that his perception changed after he met Wizkid and, according to his account, heard the singer's side of a disagreement involving the two Afrobeats stars.
Mavo said his decision to support Wizkid was not intended to provoke Burna Boy or his supporters.
“I had real respect for Burna Boy, but I completely lost the respect I had for him after I linked up with Big Wiz and he explained the full story,” he said during the live session.
He further claimed that Burna Boy and his team were wrong in the situation and questioned why he should continue supporting what he believes is the wrong side simply because of fan pressure.
Mavo's account of what Wizkid allegedly told him has not been independently verified.
The singer also addressed what he described as threats from some Burna Boy supporters to cancel him because of his position.
“You know your fav and his team are wrong but y’all want me to keep siding the wrong. No, I can’t,” Mavo said.
He accused some supporters of targeting him despite claiming that he had done nothing to provoke them.
Mavo's comments have added another layer to the highly competitive fan culture surrounding Nigeria's biggest Afrobeats stars, where disagreements between fan bases frequently spill onto social media.
Taking the confrontation further, Mavo challenged Burna Boy and his supporters to direct their energy toward the singer's music rather than attacking him.
He called on fans to encourage Burna Boy to release a hit capable of reaching No. 1 on Apple Music, while declaring that he believes Wizkid remains ahead of Burna Boy.
“Take that same energy and tell your Burna to drop a hit song to top No. 1 on Apple Music. Wizkid will always be ahead of him,” Mavo said.
The claim about who is “ahead” remains a matter of opinion among fans and depends on the particular metrics being considered.
Wizkid, whose real name is Ayodeji Balogun, has maintained a large international following and has recorded major performances and milestones throughout his career. His supporters have frequently used his global concerts and chart performances as evidence of his influence in Afrobeats.

Content creator Silly Music was reportedly spotted with Wizkid at AfroFest and appeared overwhelmed by the encounter, with a social-media post praising the singer's presence and describing the moment as an experience of the “Big Wiz” aura.

As Mavo's comments continue to circulate, the latest exchange is likely to fuel another round of debate between Wizkid and Burna Boy supporters, with fans once again arguing over influence, music, chart performance and who deserves the title of Afrobeats' biggest star.
