Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has come under criticism after he was spotted with American rapper Cardi B in Milan while his Nigerian teammates were preparing in Uyo for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clash against Madagascar.
The 27-year-old Udinese goalkeeper was the only player from Nigeria’s 24-man squad yet to report to camp when head coach Éric Chelle led 23 players through their first training session ahead of Friday’s Group L encounter.
Videos circulating on social media showed Okoye with Cardi B in Milan during Milan Fashion Week, where the goalkeeper was also involved in an Udinese club-related appearance.
The timing of the sighting generated criticism from some Nigerian football supporters and commentators, particularly because the Super Eagles were already preparing for an important qualifying fixture.
However, Nigeria team media officer Promise Efoghe subsequently confirmed that Okoye had been granted permission to attend to family and personal matters and was expected to arrive in camp on Thursday.
The approval means there is no established evidence that Okoye violated a team directive by being in Milan.
Nevertheless, the episode has triggered debate about professionalism, communication and the expectations placed on players during international windows.
Some commentators argued that, regardless of whether the absence was approved, being publicly seen at a high-profile event shortly before an important international fixture could create an unfavourable perception among supporters and teammates.
PUNCH reported that journalist Samuel Areo questioned the communication surrounding Okoye's delayed arrival, while other commentators criticised what they described as a recurring pattern of late reporting to national-team camp.
Okoye's recent performances had also increased attention on his role in the national team. He impressed during Nigeria's June friendlies against Poland and Portugal and had been included in Chelle's squad for the opening AFCON qualifiers.
His absence also opened the door for Stanley Nwabali to strengthen his claim for the starting goalkeeper position, with Arthur Okonkwo another option available to Chelle.
Meanwhile, the repeated public appearances involving Okoye and Cardi B have generated dating speculation online, although neither has publicly confirmed that they are in a relationship. Premium Times reported that the pair have been seen together on several occasions since July, including appearances in Paris, Venice, Udine and Milan.
Nigeria will host Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, September 25, before travelling to Guinea-Bissau for their second Group L qualifier on September 29.
For Okoye, the immediate focus will now be on integrating into the squad and competing for his place in Chelle's plans, while the controversy surrounding his late arrival continues to generate debate among Super Eagles supporters.
