The Madagascar national football team, the Barea, has arrived in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, ahead of its 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clash with Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
The 28-member Malagasy delegation landed at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, at about 2:05 p.m. on Monday before proceeding to its hotel after completing immigration formalities. More members of the team were expected to join the delegation later.
The visitors are scheduled to face Nigeria at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Friday, September 25, in a Group L opening qualifier.
Madagascar will be led by coach Corentin Martins, with the team hoping to begin its qualifying campaign on a positive note. The Barea reached the quarter-finals of the 2019 AFCON, where they also recorded a 2–0 victory over Nigeria during the group stage.
The arrival of the Malagasy delegation has added to the growing football atmosphere in Uyo as the city prepares to host another major international fixture.
The Super Eagles are also already in camp, with 23 players reported to have arrived and participated in the team's first training session at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Tuesday.
Reacting to images of Madagascar's arrival, a commentator praised the infrastructure that allows Akwa Ibom to host international football fixtures, linking the development to the importance of sustained capital investment in public infrastructure.
The commentator argued that without investments in facilities such as the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Nigeria could face difficulties hosting international opponents and major football events.
The stadium, therefore, is once again set to take centre stage as Nigeria begins its campaign for qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
With both teams now in Uyo, attention shifts to preparations on the pitch as the Super Eagles and the Barea get set for Friday's encounter.
