Nollywood actor Laide Olabanji has publicly declared his support for Peter Obi ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, urging Nigerians to look beyond ethnic considerations when choosing political leaders.
Olabanji made the comments in a social media post in which he compared the tenures of former military leaders Yakubu Gowon and Murtala Muhammed.
According to reports by TheCable and other outlets, the actor argued that the length of time spent in office does not necessarily determine how quickly a leader can effect change.
“If someone can destroy a country in three years, another good man can make it better in just one year. Gowon ruled for nine years, Gen. Murtala Muhammed repaired it in just six months,” Olabanji said.
He then directly linked his argument to the 2027 presidential contest, saying Nigerians should prioritize the quality of leadership they receive over ethnic or tribal affiliation.
“So if your tribe person can’t give you a better life, allow Peter Obi to give you a better country. The future of your children is very important,” he added.
Olabanji’s comments amount to a public endorsement of Obi, who is preparing for the 2027 presidential election under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), according to recent reports.
The actor’s remarks come amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, with public figures and entertainers increasingly using their social-media platforms to express support for different political actors.
Olabanji’s reference to Gowon and Murtala Muhammed was intended to illustrate his argument that the duration of a government should not, in his view, be the sole measure of its impact.
His comments have consequently added his voice to the wider debate over ethnicity, leadership and political choice as parties and candidates prepare for the 2027 elections.
