The Lagos State Government has commenced the removal of unauthorised structures and makeshift apartments reportedly constructed under bridges across the state.
The exercise is part of the government’s broader enforcement against illegal occupation of spaces beneath and around major bridges, where authorities have raised concerns over public safety, environmental degradation and obstruction of critical infrastructure.
A similar enforcement operation in October 2025 saw the state dismantle more than 200 illegal shanties and dislodge squatters around the Ijora, Apapa Road and Costain bridges. The operation involved agencies including LASTMA, LAWMA, KAI and LAMATA, alongside the Nigeria Police Force.
The latest development has drawn attention online, particularly over reports of apartments being rented out beneath bridge structures to unsuspecting residents.
The Federal Government has also previously raised concerns about illegal occupation beneath the Carter Bridge in Lagos, noting that the area had been occupied illegally and used for commercial activities.
The Lagos State Government has consistently maintained that structures erected without appropriate authorisation on public infrastructure corridors cannot be allowed to remain where they pose risks to public safety or interfere with infrastructure.
The demolition exercise is expected to affect occupants and operators of unauthorised structures in affected locations, with authorities urging residents to comply with relevant regulations governing construction and occupation of public spaces.
The development comes amid renewed enforcement activities across Lagos aimed at reclaiming public spaces and removing structures considered illegal or dangerous.
