Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has described the All Progressives Congress (APC)'s victories in the September 19 legislative bye-elections as significant ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections.
Keyamo made the assessment in a post on X while reacting to the results of the five bye-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states.
The APC won four of the five seats contested, while the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) secured the remaining seat in Bauchi State.
The APC victories were recorded in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State, Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano, Disina State Constituency in Bauchi and Udu State Constituency in Delta.
The APM won the Sakwa State Constituency in Bauchi.
Keyamo noted that the APC victories cut across the North-West, North-East and South-South geopolitical zones.
“The spread of those votes for the APC across the 3 regions is VERY SIGNIFICANT going into the general elections in January,” he said.
The minister also drew attention to the constitutional requirement for a presidential candidate to obtain at least 25 per cent of the votes in two-thirds of Nigeria's states and the Federal Capital Territory.
He argued that the constitutional provision reflects Nigeria's heterogeneous political structure.
Keyamo, a prominent APC member, then linked the bye-election results to the 2027 presidential contest and said he would provide a fuller analysis of what he described as the significance of the results in January 2027.
He also made a prediction about the outcome of the 2027 presidential election, stating that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would be declared the winner.
That prediction is Keyamo's political assertion and does not constitute an established election outcome.
In Gombe, APC candidate Kallamu MaiJama’a won the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency seat with 41,121 votes. The Labour Party recorded 3,553 votes, while APM polled 872 votes, according to reported results.
In Kano, APC candidate Husseini Datti won the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency election with 22,890 votes.
In Bauchi, APC candidate Yakubu Ali won the Disina State Constituency seat with 5,846 votes, while APM's candidate secured 5,225 votes.
However, APM won the second Bauchi contest in Sakwa State Constituency, where its candidate Adamu Yakubu polled 8,515 votes against APC's 3,771.
In Delta, APC candidate Okolosi Ator won the Udu State Constituency seat with 8,724 votes.
The results gave the APC four seats across three geopolitical regions, but the five contests represented only a small number of legislative constituencies and do not by themselves establish the outcome of the 2027 general elections.
The bye-elections nevertheless provide a recent snapshot of electoral competition in the affected constituencies as political parties prepare for the next general elections.
