Nigerian businessman and social commentator Isaac Fayose has criticised the size of the convoy of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, questioning the amount of fuel that could be consumed by the vehicles.
Fayose made the remarks while reacting to footage showing Wike’s convoy in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, with his comments subsequently circulating on social media.
According to Fayose, the size of the convoy appeared excessive at a time when Nigerians are being encouraged to manage the country’s economic difficulties.
“The Federal Government is telling us to manage, but look at Wike’s convoy in Port Harcourt,” Fayose said.
He questioned the number of vehicles accompanying the minister, drawing attention to the potential cost of fuelling and maintaining such a large convoy.
“Look at the amount of cars. Imagine the amount of fuel those cars will consume for an ordinary Minister,” he added.
Fayose’s comments have triggered reactions online, with the discussion centring on the apparent contrast between calls for economic restraint and the resources deployed around senior government officials.
The criticism also comes amid continuing public concerns over the cost of governance in Nigeria, particularly expenses associated with official convoys, security details, vehicles and other government logistics.
Supporters of large official convoys, however, could argue that ministers and other senior public officials require security and logistical support because of their positions and official responsibilities.
The footage circulating online does not, by itself, establish the exact number of vehicles in Wike’s convoy, the amount of fuel consumed or the total cost of the movement.
Fayose’s intervention has nevertheless reignited the debate over whether government officials should demonstrate greater restraint in the use of public resources, particularly during periods of economic hardship for ordinary Nigerians.
