A fresh political argument has erupted over Defence Minister General Christopher Musa, with an El-Rufai supporter accusing his critics of applying different standards to the minister's handling of allegations involving former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and those surrounding Senator Shehu Buba Umar.
Mal. Imran U. Wakili, who identifies with the #IStandWithElRufai campaign, made the remarks in a post on X while responding to comments by Zariyi Yusuf Madaki.
Wakili said supporters of El-Rufai had criticised Musa for what he described as the minister's “blatantness” against the former governor and for appearing on television to attack El-Rufai when questions surrounding the controversy were gaining attention.
Wakili accused his opponent of defending Musa's handling of the controversy while criticising others who had challenged the Defence Minister.
“You bloody hypocrite,” Wakili began, before arguing that the criticism of Musa was based on two issues: his comments about El-Rufai and his decision to address the former governor publicly rather than respond to what Wakili described as evidence circulating in the media.
The comments come after Musa accused El-Rufai of policies that allegedly deepened divisions in Kaduna State and made serious allegations concerning the former governor's handling of violence in Southern Kaduna. Those claims have generated competing reactions from El-Rufai supporters and other political groups.
Wakili's response also turned attention to Senator Shehu Buba Umar, who has faced allegations of links to banditry and terrorism financing.
The senator has denied the allegations, while the Supreme Council for Sharia'a in Nigeria has previously defended him and rejected calls for what it described as politically motivated attacks.
In the post Wakili was responding to, Zariyi Yusuf Madaki argued that those who had been strongly criticising Musa could no longer maintain the same intensity in demanding prosecution of Buba after the Supreme Council for Sharia'a expressed solidarity with the senator.
The claim has therefore become part of a wider argument over whether political, religious or regional considerations are influencing reactions to allegations involving public officials.
Wakili said his criticism of Musa was not based on the minister remaining silent but on what he considered evasiveness over the allegations being discussed.
He questioned why Musa, as Defence Minister, had chosen to address El-Rufai publicly while, in Wakili's view, questions surrounding other controversial security allegations were not receiving comparable attention.
The statement reflects Wakili's political position and does not establish that Musa ignored any specific investigation or that the Defence Ministry has failed to act on a particular allegation.
The controversy surrounding Senator Buba has been ongoing. In 2025, media reports cited allegations that he had links to bandit groups, while the senator rejected the accusations and described them as fabricated.
