Social commentator Daniel Regha has sparked renewed debate over the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), questioning what he describes as inconsistencies in the handling of similar cases involving other public figures.
In a statement shared online, Regha argued that the key issue in Kanu’s case is not solely whether he committed a treasonable offence, but why he remains in custody while other individuals accused of similar or related activities are seen to be moving freely.
“Nnamdi Kanu's case is simple. Let’s make this crystal clear, the question isn’t whether or not Kanu committed a treasonable offense, but why is he in prison while other agitators like Sunday Igboho are walking freely despite both being agitators,” he said.
He further questioned why individuals who, according to him, have publicly made statements perceived as supportive of armed groups have not faced similar legal consequences, suggesting that such disparities raise concerns about fairness in the justice system.
Regha added that, based on legal principles, any form of support for armed or criminal groups is a serious offence and should be treated accordingly, regardless of who is involved.
He concluded that the situation “reeks of ethnic bias,” calling for a more consistent and transparent application of the law across all regions and individuals.
The remarks have generated mixed reactions online, with some users agreeing that Nigeria’s justice system should be more consistent, while others criticized the comparison of separate cases involving different legal circumstances.
As of the time of filing this report, no official response has been issued by relevant authorities regarding Regha’s comments.
