Social media personality D English Alhaji has released another video in which he makes fresh allegations against Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District.
According to D English Alhaji, the latest footage was recorded in 2023 and allegedly shows Senator Buba addressing individuals he described as terrorists.
In his presentation of the video, D English Alhaji claimed that the senator referred to the individuals as “our brothers” and told them that he and others would protect them.
The allegations come amid an ongoing controversy over claims linking the senator to banditry and terrorism, allegations which Buba has repeatedly denied.
Senator Buba has rejected allegations that he sponsors, finances, facilitates or supports banditry, terrorism or kidnapping.
On September 15, the senator asked the Department of State Services (DSS), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) and Nigeria Police Force to investigate the allegations against him.
Buba said he had nothing to hide and had voluntarily submitted himself to the DSS for investigation. He also challenged anyone with evidence linking him to criminal activities to submit such evidence to the appropriate security agencies rather than rely on social media publications.
The allegations intensified after a man identified as Hassan Husseini, who said he previously had a relationship with the senator, appeared in interviews hosted by D English Alhaji.
Hassan accused Buba of supporting banditry and made further claims involving individuals allegedly linked to wanted bandit leader Dogo Gide. Buba has described the accusations as false and said his previous relationship with Hassan involved efforts to assist him with education.
The latest claim also comes after another video associated with the controversy was subjected to fact-checking.
PRNigeria reported that footage presented online as showing bandit kingpins visiting Buba's residence was actually a combination of unrelated clips. According to the fact-check, one portion showed Kaduna-based Hajj returnees who visited the senator in 2023, while another showed different individuals displaying passports.
The investigation said it found no credible evidence identifying the people in the first footage as bandits or terrorist kingpins.
Buba subsequently said the viral materials had been manipulated and urged the public to verify the origin and context of videos being circulated against him.
The latest footage presented by D English Alhaji has not, from the sources reviewed, been independently authenticated as showing Senator Buba addressing terrorists, nor has the identity of the people shown in it been independently established.
Likewise, the claim that the recording was made in 2023 and that the individuals were terrorists remains an allegation pending independent verification.
The development is nevertheless likely to add to the controversy surrounding Buba, who is also the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) governorship candidate in Bauchi State for the 2027 election.
With the senator having formally requested investigations by security agencies, the outcome of any official investigation could provide a more definitive assessment of the allegations currently circulating online.
