A 54-year-old officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, Etteng Ise, has died in a lone motor accident along the Ikom-Calabar Highway in Cross River State.
The fatal crash occurred at about 2:56 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026, near Alesi Village in Ikom Local Government Area of the state.
According to the Cross River State Police Command, Ise, who was serving at the Mfum Border in Etung Local Government Area, reportedly lost control of his vehicle while attempting to avoid a pothole on the highway.
The vehicle subsequently veered off the road into the bush and collided with a tree.
Police spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Calabar.
Following the crash, the Customs officer was rushed to Holy Family Hospital, Ikom, for medical attention.
However, a medical doctor at the facility subsequently confirmed him dead. His remains were later deposited at the hospital mortuary.
The police command expressed condolences to Ise’s family, colleagues and the Nigeria Customs Service over the tragic loss.
The Cross River State Police Command urged motorists using the highway to exercise caution, avoid excessive speed and remain vigilant, particularly when driving along roads with difficult or hazardous conditions.
The command also advised road users to pay close attention to road conditions and take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of avoidable crashes.
The incident has also renewed concerns about the condition of the Ikom-Calabar Highway, particularly the presence of potholes that can pose dangers to motorists.
For now, police have attributed the crash to the reported loss of control while the officer was attempting to avoid a pothole, with no indication that another vehicle was involved in the fatal incident.
