Nigerian record label Chocolate City Music has publicly rejected allegations circulating online linking the company to the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), foreign intelligence agencies and powerful international interests in the entertainment industry.
The controversy gained attention after claims circulated online suggesting that Chocolate City was funded, controlled or directed by foreign intelligence interests and had an affiliation with Universal Music Group (UMG).
In a statement published on its official X account on September 15, the label described the allegations as “false and irresponsible.”
Chocolate City said it had operated independently for more than two decades, attributing its growth to talent development, hard work and legitimate commercial partnerships.
The company specifically denied having any contractual relationship or affiliation with UMG.
It also rejected the allegation that it was funded or controlled by any foreign intelligence agency or state actor.
Chocolate City said it remained “wholly Nigerian-owned” and independent, with a focus on creating value for African creatives and the wider creative industry.
The claims have generated renewed discussion online about ownership, financing and international relationships within Nigeria's entertainment industry.
However, no evidence establishing that Chocolate City is funded or controlled by the CIA has been presented in the reports reviewed for this story. The label has categorically denied the allegation.
The controversy comes against the backdrop of previous public disputes involving Chocolate City and some artists.
In June 2026, rapper Odumodublvck accused the label of attempting to have him arrested in connection with an ongoing dispute. Chocolate City denied having the power to arrest anyone, saying such authority rests with law-enforcement agencies and that matters concerning the dispute were before the courts.
The latest controversy has prompted calls on social media for greater transparency concerning the ownership and business relationships of major entertainment companies.
For now, Chocolate City's position is that the allegations of foreign intelligence funding or control are false, while its denial of any contractual relationship with UMG directly addresses another major claim circulating alongside the allegations.
The claims therefore remain allegations, and any further assessment would require documentary evidence concerning the label's ownership, financing and contractual relationships.
