The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to resume its suspended nationwide strike if the Federal Government and state governments fail to urgently address outstanding issues affecting university lecturers.
The union’s latest warning has raised fresh concerns over the possibility of another disruption to academic activities in Nigerian public universities, particularly as negotiations between the lecturers and the authorities continue.
ASUU has maintained that several issues affecting the welfare of its members and the effective operation of public universities remain unresolved. The union has previously linked its industrial disputes to matters including funding, earned allowances, salary-related issues, university autonomy and the implementation of agreements reached with government.
Recent reports indicate that ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, has warned that the union could reconsider its suspended industrial action if the outstanding matters are not satisfactorily addressed.
The union is demanding urgent intervention from both the Federal Government and state governments, particularly because state-owned universities also face challenges requiring the attention of their respective governments.
ASUU has historically resorted to strikes when negotiations with government over lecturers’ welfare and university funding have broken down. The union’s prolonged 2022 strike, for instance, lasted eight months before it was eventually suspended.
The prospect of another nationwide strike could have significant consequences for millions of students enrolled in public universities, with previous industrial actions resulting in prolonged interruptions to academic calendars and graduation schedules.
ASUU is therefore expected to continue engaging government representatives in an effort to resolve the outstanding issues and prevent another shutdown of university campuses.
For now, the union’s warning does not necessarily mean that a new strike has commenced, but it places pressure on the Federal Government and state authorities to accelerate discussions and reach agreements capable of preventing another disruption to the university system.
