A throwback video of Nigerian singer Asake discussing how he met music executive and YBNL founder Olamide has resurfaced online, giving fans another look at the events that preceded his breakthrough in the Nigerian music industry.
In the video, Asake recalled repeatedly messaging Olamide from 2020, asking the rapper to help him after seeing how he had supported other emerging artistes, including Fireboy DML and Chinko Ekun.
“I’ve been texting Olamide since 2020 to help me because he has helped a lot of my friends like Chinko Ekun and Fireboy, but he didn’t reply,” Asake said.
According to the singer, the situation changed after he released “Omo Ope,” a song that eventually featured Olamide.
Asake said Olamide unexpectedly contacted him one morning and told him they needed to meet.
“One morning after we dropped the Omo Ope song, he just texted me that we needed to see.”
The singer recalled becoming nervous and even worrying about what outfit to wear for the meeting because he wanted to make a good impression.
When he eventually met Olamide, however, Asake said the YBNL boss made the offer in a surprisingly casual manner.
Olamide reportedly asked him whether he would like to join the YBNL family.
Asake previously gave a similar account during an interview with Cool FM, saying he had been messaging Olamide since 2020 and repeatedly reminded him that he had helped artistes such as Fireboy and Chinko Ekun.
The turning point came with “Omo Ope,” which was released in January 2022 and featured Olamide. Asake had earlier explained that his friend Yhemolee sent the song to Olamide, who liked it and contributed a verse.
The official song was released on January 19, 2022, while its official video followed in February.
Following the collaboration, Asake was signed to YBNL Nation and released his four-track “Ololade Asake” EP, which included “Omo Ope,” “Sungba,” “Trabaye” and “Baba God.”
In another account of the encounter, Asake said Olamide gave him the contract to take home and read before signing, although he was so excited about the opportunity that he wanted to accept immediately.
The story has resurfaced as fans continue to revisit the early stages of Asake's career and the role Olamide played in his emergence as one of the notable Nigerian artistes of his generation.
What began with unanswered messages, according to Asake, eventually turned into a meeting, a major collaboration and his entry into the YBNL family.
