The Federal Government has reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to building a strong and sustainable Nigerian economy, describing the administration’s ambition of developing a $1 trillion economy as a national mission rather than merely an economic target.
The remarks were made at a gathering of stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where senior party leaders and government officials gathered to discuss the country’s economic reforms, development priorities and long-term national prosperity.
The speaker, who represented President Tinubu at the event, praised the leadership of the APC and called for sustained support for the administration’s reform agenda.
“I am here for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who asked me to stand in for him,” the presidential representative said, explaining that he was speaking on behalf of the President at the occasion.
The representative said President Tinubu inherited significant economic challenges and difficult fiscal conditions, making major reforms necessary to stabilise and rebuild the country's economic foundation.
According to the speaker, the administration is focused on strengthening public revenue, improving economic management, expanding non-oil exports and building the foundation for long-term prosperity.
The government highlighted what it described as improvements in revenue generation, arguing that reforms introduced by the current administration were beginning to strengthen the country's fiscal capacity.
The speaker said increased government revenue would provide greater capacity for investment in critical sectors, including infrastructure, education, healthcare and other development priorities.
Attention was also drawn to Nigeria’s non-oil economy and export potential, with the administration expressing optimism that diversification would reduce the country's dependence on crude oil and create new opportunities for businesses and citizens.
The speaker stressed that Nigeria possesses enormous economic potential because of its large population, natural resources, strategic position in Africa and entrepreneurial population.
Nigeria's growing population was identified as both a challenge and a potential source of national strength.
The speaker noted that the country's population has increased significantly over the decades, creating greater demand for food, jobs, housing, healthcare, infrastructure and education.
He said the challenge for government was to ensure that population growth translates into productive economic activity rather than increased poverty and unemployment.
Investment in infrastructure, human capital, transportation and productive industries, he said, would be critical to transforming Nigeria's demographic growth into an economic advantage.
The presidential representative emphasised that the administration's ambition of building a $1 trillion Nigerian economy should not be viewed simply as a numerical target.
He described it as a national mission requiring coordinated action across government institutions, ministries and agencies.
“Building a $1 trillion economy is not merely a number; it is a national mission,” the speaker said.
He explained that achieving the ambition would require stronger economic foundations, increased productivity and sustained investment across major sectors.
However, he stressed that economic growth must ultimately translate into improvements in the everyday lives of Nigerians.
According to the speaker, the true test of economic reform would not simply be improved statistics or larger government revenue.
“The real test is when growth translates into more food, more jobs, affordable living, stable electricity and better purchasing power for Nigerians,” he said.
The government was urged to ensure that economic reforms produce tangible benefits for ordinary citizens, particularly through job creation, food production, improved infrastructure and stronger purchasing power.
The speaker maintained that the Tinubu administration was laying the foundation for future prosperity and urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive of the reforms.
He said the journey towards national economic transformation would require the collective commitment of government, businesses and citizens.
The event ended with a renewed call for national unity and coordinated action as Nigeria pursues its long-term ambition of becoming one of the world's leading economies.
