The wife of Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has urged residents living in flood-prone communities across the state to remain vigilant and relocate to safer locations as flooding continues to affect parts of Anambra.
Mrs Soludo, expressing concern over the situation, said her heart goes out to families affected by the rising floodwaters and appealed to residents to take precautionary measures before conditions become dangerous.
“The rising flood in parts of Anambra State is disturbing. As a mother, my heart goes out to the affected families,” she said.
“Please, if you live in a flood-prone area in Anambra, remain alert and move to a safer location before the situation becomes dangerous.”
Her warning comes after heavy rainfall triggered flooding in several parts of the state, including areas around Awka, where emergency responders were deployed following an incident involving schoolchildren trapped by floodwaters.
Reports said floodwaters overwhelmed sections of roads and waterways, disrupting movement and affecting homes, schools, farmlands and other properties.
The Anambra State First Lady advised residents to pay attention to weather and flood warnings, avoid crossing flooded roads and waterways and move to safer areas whenever their homes or immediate surroundings become unsafe.
She also appealed to residents to stop dumping refuse into drainage channels, warning that blocked waterways could worsen flooding and increase the risks to lives and property.
Parents and guardians were particularly advised to keep children away from floodwaters, drainage channels, streams and other dangerous areas during heavy rainfall.
Mrs Soludo further encouraged residents to report emergencies promptly to the relevant authorities and urged communities to look out for one another whenever floodwaters begin to rise.
The flooding has already prompted emergency response efforts in parts of Awka. Channels Television reported that children were rescued after floodwaters trapped a vehicle around Ring Road, while NEMA and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency coordinated response operations.
The First Lady commiserated with families and communities affected by the flooding and stressed the importance of early action, preparedness and responsible environmental practices in reducing the impact of the disaster.
She also assured residents that the state government would continue taking measures aimed at cushioning the effects of the flooding on affected families and communities.
