The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has joined members of Nigeria’s delegation in welcoming Vice President Kashim Shettima to New York ahead of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Dabiri-Erewa disclosed the development in a post on X, where she shared photographs of the arrival and welcomed Shettima, who is representing President Bola Tinubu at the global gathering.
She wrote that she joined members of the Nigerian delegation to welcome the Vice President as he arrived in New York to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st UNGA.
She also wished Shettima and other members of the delegation a “successful and impactful UNGA week.”
President Tinubu has mandated Shettima to represent him and lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st UNGA, which will hold its General Debate from September 22 to 28, 2026.
Shettima arrived in New York with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning Doris Uzoka-Anite and other senior officials.
He was received by several Nigerian officials and members of the delegation, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim.
During the General Debate, Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement and outline the country’s position on major international issues affecting national development, peace and security, economic growth and international cooperation.
He is also scheduled to participate in high-level meetings and bilateral engagements with world leaders, international organisations and development partners.
According to the Presidency, Nigeria will use the engagements to advance its positions on reform of the global financial architecture, sustainable development, climate finance, technology access and stronger African representation in global decision-making.
The 81st UNGA is being held under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
Shettima said Nigeria’s engagements would be guided by the country’s national interest and its commitment to multilateralism.
The Vice President is expected to return to Nigeria after concluding his engagements in New York.
