Monday, a resident of Meiran in Lagos State, was reportedly arrested on September 9, 2026, after she was caught disposing of waste in a drainage channel during rainfall.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) said she was subsequently arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi.
According to the report, Monday pleaded guilty to the environmental offence and was sentenced to one month in prison by the court.
The case forms part of LAWMA’s continuing enforcement against indiscriminate waste disposal across Lagos, particularly the dumping of refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.
LAWMA warned residents that improper waste disposal constitutes an environmental offence and can attract legal sanctions. The agency also urged Lagos residents to dispose of their waste through approved channels.
The authority said it would continue working with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction residents who violate environmental regulations.
The conviction comes amid renewed concerns about flooding and blocked drainage channels in Lagos, where indiscriminate dumping of waste can obstruct the movement of stormwater.
The development also serves as a warning that environmental enforcement in the state can result in criminal prosecution and imprisonment for offenders who plead guilty to illegal waste disposal.
