2027: Donald Duke Warns Against Political Desperation as Analysts Raise Concerns Over Election Violence

 Former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, has warned against what he described as growing desperation among political actors ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, calling for stronger electoral safeguards and tougher sanctions against political violence.

Duke’s concerns have renewed debate over the country’s electoral environment, particularly amid fears that intense competition for political offices could heighten political tensions and increase the risk of violence as the 2027 polls approach.

Political analyst Dr. Reuben Abati backed Duke’s position, stressing that no political ambition should be allowed to justify the loss of human life.

Abati argued that Nigeria must move away from the perception of politics as a “do-or-die” pursuit and restore the principle that political office is primarily an opportunity to serve the people.

He said political competition should not become a justification for intimidation, violence or the sacrifice of lives in pursuit of electoral victory.

Abati also called for stronger institutions capable of effectively investigating and prosecuting electoral offences.

According to him, electoral violence, intimidation and other forms of political crime must attract meaningful consequences if Nigeria is to build a more credible democratic system.

He stressed that without effective enforcement, laws designed to protect the electoral process could have limited impact.

The concerns raised by Duke and Abati have placed renewed emphasis on the need to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral institutions ahead of 2027.

Analysts said political parties and candidates have a responsibility to conduct their campaigns peacefully and respect the rights of voters and political opponents.

They argued that elections should be contests over ideas, policies, programmes and leadership capacity rather than battles in which political actors feel compelled to win at all costs.

As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, observers said stronger institutions, effective sanctions and greater restraint by political actors will be critical to preventing violence and preserving public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
