The incident occurred on September 26, 2026, along Olugbede Street, Egbeda, Lagos, while police officers were conducting a stop-and-search operation.
According to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, officers flagged down a Lexus ES 350 driven by Olumide. The driver initially stopped but allegedly accelerated as Sergeant Okediji approached the driver's side.
The police said the officer was knocked down and dragged underneath the vehicle for several metres despite efforts by fellow officers and passers-by to make the driver stop.
Olumide was subsequently pursued and arrested, while the vehicle was recovered by the police.
Speaking after his arrest, Olumide reportedly gave a different account of how the incident happened, claiming that the vehicle's brake failed at the critical moment.
“The brake failed. The brake didn’t work,” the young man said, according to reports.
He also claimed that he sustained cuts and injuries after falling from the vehicle during the incident.
However, the police account states that the driver had initially stopped after being flagged down before allegedly speeding away as the sergeant approached the vehicle.
Sergeant Okediji sustained multiple fractures and serious head injuries after being knocked down and dragged underneath the vehicle.
He was initially taken to a nearby hospital before being referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His remains were deposited at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the vehicle involved was recovered to a police station as investigations continued.
The Commissioner of Police described the incident as unfortunate and urged motorists to cooperate with officers during lawful stop-and-search operations.
The circumstances surrounding the death remain subject to police investigation and any subsequent judicial proceedings. Olumide's account that the brake failed has not been independently established.
