Safe Schools Training Ends in Plateau

A week-long training programme aimed at strengthening safety in schools has ended in Jos, Plateau State, with stakeholders calling for stronger protection for students, teachers and learning centres.

The programme, themed “Strengthening Community-Based Safe School Framework for a More Secure and Resilient Nigeria,” was organised as part of a national campaign exercise and held at the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre, Shere Hills, Jos.

The training focused on school safety, child protection, exclusion and the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse.

Representing Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the Commissioner for Education, Katlyn Gang, assured participants that the state government would continue working to protect and secure schools across the state.

The National Coordinator of the organising initiative said the capacity-building programme would strengthen cooperation between communities, education authorities and security agencies.

She added that stakeholders would work together on community sensitisation, public enlightenment, information sharing and intelligence gathering to improve school security.

With more than 3,000 coordinators selected from the 774 local government areas across Nigeria, organisers expressed optimism that the initiative would contribute to safer learning environments when schools resume.
