Security agencies demonstrated a measure of restraint and professionalism during the recently concluded Osun State governorship election, with reports indicating that police personnel helped protect electoral materials and prevent thugs from disrupting the voting process.
Speaking on the conduct of the election, an analyst noted that, unlike previous elections where security personnel were sometimes accused of aiding the removal or destruction of ballot boxes, the Osun exercise recorded instances where police officers rescued ballot boxes and confronted suspected thugs.
There were, however, reports of allegations that some security personnel received payments ranging from ₦2 million to ₦5 million in some local government areas.
Despite such allegations, the overall assessment was that security agencies remained relatively restrained throughout the election.
The development was described as a “glimpse” of the professionalism that the Inspector-General of Police has repeatedly promised to bring to Nigeria's electoral process.
However, analysts cautioned that the Osun election should be viewed as a dress rehearsal for the 2027 general elections, when security agencies will face a far larger and more complex assignment across the country.
The expectation is that the lessons from Osun will be used to strengthen the neutrality, professionalism and accountability of security personnel during future elections.
The success of Nigeria's electoral process, observers argue, will depend not only on the conduct of voters and political parties but also on whether security agencies can protect voters, electoral officials and materials without taking sides.
With the 2027 elections expected to involve significantly more polling locations and political competition, the performance of the security agencies in Osun has provided both encouragement and a warning: the progress witnessed must be sustained and significantly improved nationwide.
