Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has criticized Nigeria’s current economic conditions, describing the country as one of the most difficult places to live due to rising living costs and recent government policies.
In a statement shared on social media, Sowore argued that recent economic reforms have worsened hardship for citizens, citing the removal of fuel subsidy and increases in tariffs without corresponding adjustments in wages.
“Nigeria is currently the poorest place on earth to live,” Sowore said. “When this government came into existence, the first thing they did was place a sledge hammer on the survival mode of Nigerians by removing subsidy and hiking tariffs, without increasing the wages and salaries of people to bear the high cost of living.”
His remarks reflect ongoing public debate over economic reforms introduced by the current administration, particularly fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange policy adjustments, which have contributed to rising inflation and increased transportation and food costs.
Economic analysts note that while government reforms are aimed at stabilizing long-term fiscal conditions and reducing debt burdens, they have also triggered short-term economic pressure on households and businesses.
The Federal Government has previously defended its policies, stating that subsidy removal was necessary to reduce unsustainable public spending and redirect funds toward infrastructure and social programs.
Sowore’s comments have since generated reactions online, with supporters agreeing with his assessment of worsening economic conditions, while critics argue that broader economic context should be considered when evaluating the reforms.
