The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, at the age of 66.
The actor’s death was confirmed on Sunday, August 23, 2026, by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during an emotional Instagram live session. Reports said she broke down in tears while announcing that her father had died.
Ogogo had been battling stage-four cancer, with his daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, publicly appealing for urgent medical assistance earlier in the week. The family had sought access to specialists and hospitals capable of providing further treatment as his condition deteriorated.
The development comes only days after the family dismissed earlier reports claiming that the actor had died. At the time, his daughters urged members of the public to disregard the reports and appealed for medical support for the veteran actor.
Before his death, several colleagues, fans and well-wishers rallied around the actor following news of his illness. Efforts were also reportedly made to secure specialist medical attention for him.
Taiwo Hassan was one of the prominent figures in Yoruba-language Nollywood, with a career spanning several decades. Born on October 31, 1959, in Ilaro, Ogun State, he began his acting career in 1981 and later became widely recognised by his stage name, Ogogo.
He featured in numerous Yoruba and English-language productions and remained a familiar face to generations of Nigerian film audiences. His roles in productions including Omo Ghetto, Anikulapo and Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre further cemented his place in the Nigerian film industry.
His death has triggered an outpouring of grief among fans, colleagues and members of the entertainment industry, with tributes expected to continue as Nollywood mourns one of its veteran performers.
Taiwo Hassan ‘Ogogo’ was 66.
