Federal Government Launches RAMCO to Strengthen Renewable Energy Asset Management

The Federal Government has launched the Renewable Asset Management Company, RAMCO, in a move aimed at improving the management, maintenance and sustainability of Nigeria's renewable energy infrastructure.

The initiative was unveiled in Abuja, where the Minister of Power, Joseph Tabi, said RAMCO would address some of the longstanding challenges associated with maintaining renewable energy projects after their commissioning.

According to the minister, the company is expected to preserve the value of renewable energy assets, improve their operational uptime, establish transparent performance benchmarks and introduce clearer maintenance and replacement frameworks.

The government says the objective is to ensure that renewable energy projects continue functioning and delivering benefits to communities long after their installation.

The Minister of Education, Tunde Aliu, also highlighted the importance of reliable electricity to the education sector.

He noted that greater access to renewable energy could support schools and other learning institutions, particularly tertiary institutions, where dependable electricity is essential for teaching, research and digital learning.

Stakeholders say RAMCO could also encourage greater private-sector participation in Nigeria's renewable energy sector by creating clearer structures for asset management and long-term investment.

They argue that the initiative should go beyond maintaining solar panels and replacing batteries to developing a sustainable system capable of preserving public infrastructure, supporting domestic industry and attracting private capital.

The Federal Government says the success of RAMCO will ultimately be measured by its ability to keep renewable energy assets operational, protect public investment and expand access to dependable electricity in underserved communities.

The launch therefore marks a shift from simply commissioning renewable energy projects to ensuring that those projects remain productive throughout their operational life.
