A newly surfaced video showing families and children enjoying the recently inaugurated City Gate Fountain has sparked mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians questioning the use of the public facility while others see it as a welcome recreational and community space.
The footage, which emerged on Wednesday, shows dozens of children and families gathered around the fountain, playing in the water and enjoying the environment.
Supporters of the scene argued that public fountains and similar spaces can serve as recreational and tourist attractions, pointing to well-known public spaces in cities such as London, Manchester and New York.
They said providing places where families can relax and children can play contributes to community building and gives residents opportunities for recreation without having to travel far.
Others, however, questioned whether the fountain was designed for public bathing or recreational activities, prompting calls for clearer information about the intended use of the facility.
The debate comes amid wider discussions about public infrastructure in Nigerian cities and whether newly constructed facilities are being designed with adequate recreational spaces for families.
