Analyst Urges Nigerians to Pay More Attention to Senators and House of Representatives Members

A political affairs analyst, Mr. Dotun Ajomola, has urged Nigerians to pay greater attention to the people they elect to the National Assembly, warning that the country's excessive focus on presidential elections has allowed many lawmakers to escape adequate scrutiny.

Speaking during a political discussion on the controversy surrounding the proposed return of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma to the Senate, Ajomola argued that Nigerians have traditionally paid little attention to who represents them in the Senate and House of Representatives.

According to him, the tendency to concentrate almost exclusively on the presidency has weakened citizens' engagement with the legislative arm of government, despite the enormous influence lawmakers have over the country's laws and budgets.

“We don't pay attention. Before, we don't care who goes to the House of Representatives. We don't care who becomes the senator. We are only so concerned about who becomes the president.”

Ajomola said this attitude needs to change because legislators are responsible for making laws and approving budgets, decisions that ultimately determine the direction of communities and the country.

He urged Nigerians to develop what he described as electoral activism, saying voters must monitor the performance of their senators and members of the House of Representatives just as closely as they monitor elected executives.
