Adeleke’s Grassroots Support Overcomes Political Setbacks in Osun Election

The outcome of the Osun State governorship election has been attributed in part to Governor Ademola Adeleke’s strong grassroots connection, which analysts say helped him overcome political challenges and setbacks surrounding his re-election campaign.

Despite running on the platform of the Accord Party, a relatively less prominent political platform nationally, Adeleke was able to secure the support of a significant section of the electorate and retain his position.

Accord's strongest political presence in recent years has been particularly visible in Osun State, where the party has continued to build a profile around local political activities.

The election was also marked by controversy within the party. Just days before the poll, an individual associated with Accord reportedly declared support for the APC candidate and campaigned against Adeleke. The person was subsequently described by party officials as an alleged impersonator.

Despite the development, Adeleke's support among voters remained strong.

Political observers argue that the episode demonstrates the importance of grassroots political organisation and personal popularity, particularly in elections where voters have established relationships with candidates beyond party labels.

According to the analysis, when a politician maintains a strong connection with the electorate, political defections and campaign disruptions may not necessarily translate into electoral defeat.

The Osun result therefore offers another lesson ahead of the 2027 general elections: while political parties and their structures remain important, candidate popularity, grassroots mobilisation and voter loyalty can play a decisive role in determining electoral outcomes.

The development also comes as attention shifts to other challenges facing Nigeria, including the crisis in the country's university system and the reported departure of hundreds of lecturers from state-owned institutions.
